There is a common misconception that orthodontic treatment is primarily for young people. In reality, though, you can start to straighten your teeth at virtually any age. In fact, many adults are excellent candidates for braces because they are highly responsible and are committed to making their treatment a success. What can you expect when you choose to get braces as an adult? Let’s talk about a few key things that you should keep in mind.

You Are Not Alone

A 2020 survey in Britain revealed that most orthodontists are seeing an uptick in the number of adult patients as COVID-19 restrictions are slowly loosened up. Most of the patients are between the ages of 26 and 55. What about in the United States? It is reasonable to expect that trends are similar here. In fact, it is estimated that 1 in 4 orthodontic patients in the U.S are over the age of 21.

What can you take away from these statistics? No one will think that you are strange if you get braces as an adult. In fact, your peers may be motivated to start thinking about the state of their own teeth.

You Have Treatment Options

Traditional metal braces are a reliable way to straighten teeth. However, they are not your only treatment option. Many adults are great candidates for clear aligners, which are popular due to their subtle appearance. You could choose also ceramic braces, which are designed to blend in with the natural color of teeth. Lingual braces, which are installed on the back side of the teeth, are another popular choice among image-conscious adults. Your orthodontist can help you weigh the pros and cons of each treatment so you can make a decision that fits in with your circumstances and goals.

Braces Are Convenient

Some adults hesitate to get braces because they are concerned about time. Really, though, your treatment should not consume too much of your schedule. After you adapt to the oral hygiene techniques that are necessary to care for your teeth and braces, they should become second nature to you. You will have to see your orthodontist periodically for checkups and adjustments. However, these appointments are usually relatively quick.

Time Will Pass Quickly

When you first get braces, the idea of spending a year or more with them might seem a little daunting. However, most people find that the time passes quickly. As long as you do your best to comply with your orthodontist’s recommendations, the chances that you will run into any unnecessary delays are quite low. And when your braces are finally removed and you see your new smile, you will be glad for the time you invested in it.

You are not too old for orthodontic treatment! Getting braces as an adult can be an exciting experience that provides lifelong benefits.
